Troubleshooting guide

F. Resetting the Array Controller (MCE4), the Motor Controller, and the Perle
From flamingos1a:
1. telnet baytech userid: mce4pow, motorpow, or perlepow
password: __________ [regular flamingos1a login password]
(For telnet from a Kitt Peak machine, the baytech's name is flmn-4m-p).
2. reboot 1
3. logout
4. If you rebooted the perle, close all daemons (the TEMPS, MOTOR, and MCE4 xterm windows),
otherwise leave them open.
5. initflam.pl
G. Data Transfer & DVD Burning
Data are written to disk on flamingos1a automatically. At the start of every night you should run the
autocopy script (see below) which will automatically copy the data to nutmeg. We also suggest using the
mirror script to move the data from flamingos1a to one of the MacMinis from which one can easily save the
data to DVD, external USB hard drive, or transfer data to their home institution or laptop.
Don't even think about writing data to tape.
Instructions for moving data from flamingos1a to nutmeg:
Run Start.autocopy.4m.nutmeg.sh at the start of the night in order to background copy the data to nutmeg.
Instructions for moving data from flamingos1a to mayall-2 or 3:
From mayall-2 or mayall-3 run ~/bin/mirror flamingos1a <dir>, where <dir> is the data directory in
/data/4mguest on flamingos1a.
One may plug an external USB hard drive into one of the USB ports on the mayall-2/3 monitor. It will
automount as /Volumes/TAG, where TAG is the ID of the disk. Then cd to the external disk, create a
data directory, then cd the data from mayall-2/3 to the disk.
Burning DVDs:
Although one can write data to DVD from nutmeg, the process is rather ancient. It is much easier to use the
mirror script to copy the data to mayall-2/3 and use that computer to burn the data to disk. Insert a blank
DVD into the MacMini and it will bring up a dialog which asks if you want to burn data to the disk.
One may also ssh into nutmeg or mayall-2/3 from a laptop and scp or sftp the data directly to the laptop.
