TURNING
Turningimproperly.
ATVcouldgooutof control,causinga collisionoroverturn.
Alwaysfollow properproceduresfor turningasdescribedintheowner's
manual.
Practiceturningat lowspeedsbeforeattemptingtoturn atfaster speeds.
Donotturnatexcessivespeed.
ToturntheATV,the ridermustusethepropertechnique. Becausethisvehicle
hasa solidrearaxle,bothrearwheelsalwaysturnat thesamespeed.Thismeans
thatiftherearwheelsaregettingequaltraction,thevehiclewilltendto move
straightahead.Thisisbecausethe rearwheelswill travelthe samedistance.For
thevehicletoturn,theoutsiderearwheelmusttravela longerdistancethatthe
insiderearwheel. Tomakethishappen,the ridermustcreatelesstractionfor the
insidewheel,allowingittoskid. Thisallowsit to travela shorterdistancethan
theoutsidewheel. Thishappenseventhoughbothwheelsarestill turningatthe
samespeed.
ToturnATV,usethefollowinqtechnique:
Moveyourbodyweightforward andtothe
insideoftheturn.
Turnthehandlebarwhile lookingin the
directionoftheturn.
FORHIGHERSPEEDSORSHARPERTURNS
Usethesametechniquethatyouusewhenyoumoveyourbodyweightfarther
towardthe insideof the turntomaintainyourbalance. Naturalturningforces
(whichcanpushthevehicleto theoutsideoftheturn) increaseasthe speedor
theturnsharpnessincreases.Thismeansyou mustleanyourbodyfarther into
theturnasyou gofaster or turnmoresharply.Thispreventsthevehiclefrom
tippingovertotheoutsideof theturn. IfyourATVstartstotipwhileturning,lean
yourbodyfarther intotheturnwhile graduallyreducingthethrottleandmaking
theturnwider,if possible.
