INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION The ORION® Meter Reading System for Trimble® Ranger is an application designed for automated and manual meter reading of ORION water and gas endpoints. This manual is the guide for installing the software on a Trimble Ranger X handheld computer. NNOTE: For installing software on a Trimble Ranger 3 handheld computer, refer to ORI-PM-00100-EN-02. Audience and Purpose Instructions are included for existing Trimble Ranger handheld users who are updating to OFA 2.
REMOVING PREVIOUS SOFTWARE VERSIONS REMOVING PREVIOUS SOFTWARE VERSIONS Before installing the new software, remove any older versions of the software that are on the handheld. The Factory Reset method (1) is recommended. Read the descriptions below and choose the appropriate procedure based on your handheld setup. 1. Removing the Previous Software Using Factory Reset (Recommended) Factory reset is the recommended method for removing the previous version of the meter reading software.
REMOVING PREVIOUS SOFTWARE VERSIONS Removing Previous Software Using Factory Reset Start the factory reset procedure with the handheld powered on. NNOTE: Read through all the steps before you start since you must be prepared to perform the first two steps quickly. CAUTION: If you previously added software to the handheld that you do NOT want to remove, use the Alternative method, "Removing Previous Software Using Remove Programs" on page 8. 1.
REMOVING PREVIOUS SOFTWARE VERSIONS Removing Previous Software Using Remove Programs Start the software removal with the handheld powered on. 1. Tap the Windows Start button in the top left corner of the handheld screen to see the menu. 2. Tap Settings> System tab> Remove Programs. Result: The Remove Programs screen opens. Figure 1: Settings> System tab 3. Find the Badger Meter software in the list of programs. The file name starts with "Badger Meter, Inc..." 4. Tap the file to select it.
REMOVING PREVIOUS SOFTWARE VERSIONS 8. To complete the removal, tap the Windows Start button and then tap Programs in the menu that displays. 9. Tap File Explorer> Program Files. Result: The Badger Field Applications folder appears in the list of Program Files. Figure 4: My Device 10. Tap and hold the BMI_APP_DATA folder until a menu displays as shown in Figure 8. Then tap Delete. Result: All the previous meter reading software programs are removed, and the handheld is ready for the new software installation. Refer to "Installing the Meter Reading Software" on page 14.
REMOVING PREVIOUS SOFTWARE VERSIONS Removing Previous Software from Kiosk Mode NNOTE: This procedure is only for handhelds in Kiosk mode. Operating the handheld in Kiosk mode, the main handheld screen appears as it does in Figure 9. Figure 9: Kiosk mode To remove the previous software on a handheld in Kiosk mode, follow these steps. NNOTE: You can also remove Kiosk software by using the procedure "Removing Previous Software Using Factory Reset" on page 7.
REMOVING PREVIOUS SOFTWARE VERSIONS 3. Type in the code to unlock the handheld. NNOTE: If you do not have the code, contact Badger Meter Technical Support for the code to unlock Kiosk mode. Result: When the handheld is unlocked, it returns to Admin mode and the Windows start menu is displayed as shown in Figure 12. Figure 11: Enter unlock code 4. Tap Settings on the Windows Start menu. Result: The Settings window opens. Figure 12: Remove Programs 5. Tap the System tab. Then tap Remove Programs.
REMOVING PREVIOUS SOFTWARE VERSIONS 6. Tap "Askarya Pocket Kiosk." Then tap Remove. 7. Tap Yes to confirm the program removal. Figure 14: Confirm program removal 8. Tap to select each remaining program. For each program, tap Remove. Then tap Yes to confirm the program removal. 9. When all programs are removed, tap ok to exit Remove Programs. Figure 15: Remove remaining programs Once the previous software programs are removed, the handheld is ready for the new software installation.
INSTALLING THE METER READING SOFTWARE INSTALLING THE METER READING SOFTWARE The ORION Meter Reading System software comes loaded on one DVD provided by Badger Meter. Three software files are included on the DVD: • 0 – .NET framework • 1 – Badger Field Applications. These include: -------- • ORION Field Application (OFA) 2.
INSTALLING THE METER READING SOFTWARE Installing Meter Reading Software on the Handheld 1. Insert the memory stick with the software files into the USB port on the handheld. Figure 17: Start> Programs> File Explorer 2. Tap Windows Start> Programs> File Explorer. 3. Tap the drop-down menu in the tool bar and select Hard Disk. NNOTE: If the memory stick is not inserted, Hard Disk does not display. Figure 18: Hard disk 4. Tap Hard Disk to see the software files.

After the "0" file installs, a screen displays with the option to restart or continue as shown in Figure 21. Tap Cancel to continue. Figure 21: Choose Cancel to continue Result: The software selection screen displays again. 8. Tap to select the second file labeled "1 Badger Field Applications." Result: The file location window opens. 9.

Tap to select and install the last file labeled "2 Daylight Savings Fixer_WIn..." Figure 24: Installation in progress Result: The last file installs. When the window closes, the system automatically reboots and returns to the start screen.
INSTALLING THE METER READING SOFTWARE Kiosk Mode After the meter reading software installation is complete, the Kiosk mode application is located in the My Documents folder and can be activated from that location. 1. Go to Start > Programs> File Explorer> My Device> My Documents. Figure 26: My Device> My Documents 2. Tap the file "KioskMode_Badger_Field_A..." to install Kiosk mode.
