INTRODUCTION
The ORION® Meter Reading System (ORS) is an application designed for automated meter reading ORION water and gas
endpoints. This manual is the guide for installing the software on a laptop computer.
Audience and Purpose
Instructions are included for existing ORION laptop users, with Windows® 7 or Windows XP operating systems, who are
updating ORS software, and for users who are installing ORS 2.x for the first time to a customer-supplied laptop.
Minimum System Requirements
ORS 2.x requires Windows 7, Service Pack 1 (32-bit) or Windows XP, Service Pack 3.
The laptop on which the software is installed must be a CF-31 or CF-30 Panasonic Toughbook® or, if supplied by the customer,
the computer requires a DVD drive for software installation and must meet the system specifications as identified in the most
recent version of Technical Brief ORI-T-39, ORION Premium Laptop System.
The Windows version and the Service Pack level can be found by right-clicking Computer (Windows 7)/My Computer
(Windows XP) in the Windows Start Menu and selecting Properties. Version information can be confirmed in the display
window.
OTE:N If your computer does not meet the minimum system requirements, ORS 2.x will not run as designed until you
upgrade/update your computer system.
About this Manual
The ORION Meter Reading System software installation manual has three main parts:
• Removing Previous Software Versions
• Installing the ORION® Meter Reading System Software (ORS 2.x, ORION ME Endpoint Utility and ORION CE Endpoint
Utility)
• Installing the Map Files

installed software and this manual. The software version number on the screens in the manual may differ from the
version of software you are installing.
Typographic Conventions
• Items on the software screens that you will be asked to select or choose by clicking a button, highlighting, checking
a box or another similar means are in bold text and capitalized in the manual.
Example: Click once on the View Report button.
• Names of options, boxes, columns, fields, and sections are italicized. In most cases, first letters will be capitalized.
Example: Meter Reading Cycle
• Messages and special markings are in quotation marks, with first letters capitalized.
Examples: “Service Stopped” and "Unread"
