TheIEC61010standarddenessafetycategoryratingsthatspecifytheamountofelectricalenergyavailableandthe
voltage impulses that may occur on electrical conductors associated with these category ratings. The category rating
isaRomannumeralofI,II,III,orIV.Thisratingisalsoaccompaniedbyamaximumvoltageofthecircuittobetested,
whichdenesthevoltageimpulsesexpectedandrequiredinsulationclearances.Thesecategoriesare:
CategoryI(CATI):Measurementinstrumentswhosemeasurementinputsarenotintendedtobeconnectedtothemains
supply. The voltages in the environment are typically derived from a limited-energy transformer or a battery.
CategoryII(CATII):Measurementinstrumentswhosemeasurementinputsaremeanttobeconnectedtothemains
supplyatastandardwalloutletorsimilarsources.Examplemeasurementenvironmentsareportabletoolsand
household appliances.
CategoryIII(CATIII):Measurementinstrumentswhosemeasurementinputsaremeanttobeconnectedtothemains
installationofabuilding.Examplesaremeasurementsinsideabuilding’scircuitbreakerpanelorthewiringofperma-
nently-installed motors.
CategoryIV(CATIV):Measurementinstrumentswhosemeasurementinputsaremeanttobeconnectedtotheprimary
power entering a building or other outdoor wiring.
