Make dowels to perfectly match a project or from a specific
species of timber. The Veritas Dowel Cutter and a few timber
off-cuts will do the job. The carbon-steel blade in the plated
zinc alloy body is adjustable. They work equally well in soft,
green or hard woods. The curved blade is relatively easy to
sharpen when required. Handheld like a pencil sharpener, they
put accurate tenons on the tips of turnings or rustic furniture
components. Alternatively using a cordless drill, you need only
cut square stock slightly oversize (1.5mm is ample). Use one of
the sockets (1/2” size for the 3/8” and 7/16” cutters or a 5/8” for
the 1/2”cutter) and a 3/8” sq drive to ¼” hex adaptor, to power
the stock through the dowel cutter. Imperial sizes only available
3/8”(9.5mm), 7/16”(11mm) and 1/2”(12.7mm).

Make strong precise joints with speed and ease. Use for making
furniture and cabinets.
The innovative stepped and ribbed form of these dowels
(or maybe they should be called wooden nails) keeps the
glue where you want it, in the joint, without the problem of
compression experienced in ordinary dowel joints. The ribs grip
the sides of the stepped pockets as they swell with the glue to
lock them in place.
Available in three sizes, the starter packs are complete with a
unique stepped drill bit for an exact fit and a supply of the Birch
dowels.
Mini Kit (6.5 diam. x 41.5) for timber 12 - 14mm thick.
Standard Kit (10.5 diam. x 70mm) for timber 16 - 25mm thick.
Large Kit ‘2X’ (12.8 diam. x 90mm) for timber up to 32mm thick.

Lie-Nielsen Dowel Plates
A traditional tool used to make exact sized dowels from any
solid timber. You simply hammer a slightly larger blank through
a selected hole. The dowel plate is a 130mm x 38mm x 6.3mm
thick, surface ground A-2 cryogenically treated tool steel. The
machined holes have 6° clearance on the underside but are
parallel for the first 0.6mm. Hardened to 60 HRC it is doubtful
whether it will ever need sharpening. Both metric and imperial
plates are available, to produce 3mm, 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm,
12mm and 16mm dowels or 1/8”, 3/16”, 1/4”, 5/16”, 3/8”, 1/2” & 5/8”
in imperial sizes.
