Surface Plate
Measuring 300(12”) x 104(4.1/8”) x 28mm(1.1/8”) high and
weighing approximately 6.3kg(14lb), this is one substantial
lapping plate! Made from an iron chosen for its dimensional
stability and material consistency (you won’t fi nd blade-
scratching carbides in the material), the bottom and sides are
machined, and the top is ground fl at to within 0.025mm(0.001”)
over the entire surface. The unique channel design, optimised for
a fi gure-eight lapping pattern, serves to eliminate resistance from
hydraulic lock and captures excess oil, abrasive and slurry. It is
designed to condition or smooth previously ground surfaces and
is used with light oil. We offer a range of grits, but we recommend
280 grit for twisted, wavy or linished objects, 400 grit for ground
surfaces with a slightly rough texture, and 600 grit for surfaces
requiring little material removal.

At 12mm thick, this piece of fl oat glass makes a very practical
lapping plate for smaller planes, plane irons, chisels and fl atting
waterstones. The edges are smooth and polished. 12mm thick
fl oat glass is an ideal base for using with sheet abrasive. Wet and
dry abrasive can be stuck down using spray mount although even
a small amount of water is often suffi cient to hold it in place. Back
the glass with some thick MDF or better still an off-cut of 40mm
thick kitchen worktop. Size 300 x 300 x 12mm.

Produced for honing and maintaining the edges on both the
inside and outside of gouges and vee tools, the Flexcut SlipStrop
consists of a complex moulding with two areas of leather and a
bar of a specially developed honing compound. The compound
is available separately for those wishing to use it on their existing
strop. In use, the particular part of the moulding most suited to
the chosen tool is rubbed crayon-like with compound and the
tool stropped. A mirror fi nish is achieved quickly, and the resulting
razor edge can be maintained by repeating the process many
times before resharpening is required. Use for gouges and vee
tools both inside and outside.

Although designed with carvers in mind the benefi ts of hard leather
honing wheels can be used to refi ne a full range of the sharp edge
tools. The Standard kit contains a block of honing compound and
one fl at faced 90 x 20mm wide leather honing wheel. The Deluxe kit
contains a block of compound and two 90mm hard leather honing
wheels, one fl at faced 20mm wide the other with a narrow 60° vee
edge. The wheels are arbor mounted for fi tting to a drill, pillar drill
etc. Unlike polishing mops and other softer surfaces, which can
round over the edge being honed, hard leather wheels are better at
holding a straight line and maintaining a precise edge.

Precision ground to a fl atness tolerance of 0.127mm (0.005”) over
the entire surface, this honing plate is an excellent substrate for
diamond paste. The dimensionally stable low carbon steel will
retain its fl atness over a lifetime of ordinary use. The machining
process creates a slight texture. This helps to capture diamond
grit without compromising overall fl atness. In use, the diamond
particles readily embed into the softer steel to form a durable,
fast-cutting abrasive surface. A dedicated plate for each grit size,
should you choose to use more than one, cuts the risk of cross-
contamination. Each measures 204 x 76 x 9.5mm and weighs
1.1kg. Made in Canada

Veritas Steel Honing Plate
Composed of monocrystalline diamond in a mineral oil base,
the paste embeds into the surface of a lapping plate or strop. It
abrades quickly and lasts a long time. Using diamond paste, you
can achieve an exceptionally keen edge quickly and easily. Use a
fl at, steel honing plate to create an abrasive surface that will last
a lifetime. Alternatively, simply make a strop from close-grained
hardwood or MDF, apply a few drops of paste and use it to bring
up a polished edge. Begin with the grit that corresponds to your
fi nest stone and progress to fi ner paste: 6-micron following a fi ne
stone, 3-micron after the 6-micron paste or an extra-fi ne stone
and the 1-micron to provide a mirror fi nish. A separate plate
is required for each grade. Made in the USA, the paste comes
in 2-gram syringes, sold individually or as a kit of all three. Not
recommended for use on leather strops.

Sharpening or honing removes metal from the bevel, whereas
stropping burnishes and polishes. This double sided strop measures
200 x 65mm, suitable for the majority of chisels and plane irons. A
bar of special honing compound is included. The design allows its
use with the DMT DuoSharp base. A version is available including
the base. The strop only requires a minimal amount of compound.
Only charge one side of the strop with compound. Work the
blade on the charged side fi rst then fi nish on the uncharged side.
Stropping ensures the point where bevel and back meet is as
smooth as possible, resulting in the sharpest of edges.

Double Sided Leather Strop
Ideal for honing hardened steel blades, use on your chosen honing
block/strop, felt, leather or wood. This honing compound, is one of
the most effective on the market. It is primarily aluminum oxide
blended with other fi ne abrasives to give the best combination
of cutting speed and fi ne, mirror fi nish with a light wax fi lm. The
bonding is specially formulated for ease of charging, it can be used
for fi nal honing of almost any tool. 180g bar.

Although Flexcut call this a knife
strop, it can also be used for other
edge tools just as effectively.
If a blade has already been honed, it will benefi t from stropping
to polish the steel further and give an extra degree of sharpness.
Regular stropping of a blade means less honing which saves
time and effort. Supplied with a block of Flexcut Gold Polishing
Compound for a razor edge.
