Filters and Spoofing
Network clients, servers and applications exchange not only
user data, but also network control information. This kind of
communication allows a server to test whether the connec-
tions to its clients are active, for example.
In such cases, messages that are broadcast throughout the
network would normally be transported to remote computers
as well.
Ordinarily this results in the physical connection remaining
permanently dialed up, with costs accruing continuously. In
order to prevent that, NetWAYS/ISDN uses filters and “spoof-
ing” mechanisms to minimize the redundant network traffic
over the ISDN link.
Many network overhead packets and control messages are
not absolutely necessary in order for the remote computer to
operate in the LAN, and can be filtered out of the traffic over
the ISDN line.
Which packets and network protocols are affected by filters
and spoofing mechanisms depends on the remote access
server’s features. The AVM Access Server supports all of the
features described here.
