6 Controller A1 PCMCIA – 1 Introduction
1 Introduction
Modern telecommunication no longer simply means tele-
phoning. Surfing the Internet with a computer, using the re-
sources of the company’s network by means of remote ac-
cess, sending faxes, communicating with employees work-
ing outside the office via e-mail – electronic communication
is opening up more and more interesting possibilities
around the world. Anyone wanting to make use of these new
possibilities needs an efficient telecommunication network.
You can use the AVM ISDN-Controller A1 PCMCIA to connect
your computer to the ISDN network. ISDN stands for Integrat-
ed Services Digital Network and is a digital, internationally
available telecommunications network. ISDN has three im-
portant features that distinguish it from conventional com-
munications media:
High Speed
Data is transmitted on one of the two B-channels available at
a speed of 64 000 bit/s. In reality, this means extremely fast
connections and short transmission periods. The AVM ISDN-
Controller A1 PCMCIA also allows you to bundle the two B-
channels so that the transmission speed is doubled.
Integration of Services
With ISDN, all public telecommunications services such as
telephony, fax, data and image transfer are carried out over a
single data network. Users can therefore use all services
available on one ISDN line. You can, for example, make a
telephone call on one B-channel and at the same time re-
ceive a fax on the other B-channel.
Excellent Line Quality
The third important feature of ISDN is the end-to-end digital
transfer of data: this is the basis for high transmission quali-
ty. Poor connections and data transmission errors are now a
thing of the past thanks to ISDN.
