8.2 IDM Architecture
The ISDN Driver Model (ISDN Driver Model IDM) illustrated
below, integrates ISDN into the Microsoft family of operating
systems.
IDM architecture
The ISDN Driver Model provides the framework for all driver
components of AVM ISDN products. This model describes
the integration of all ISDN services and their utilization by
the application. The driver model also defines the transpar-
ent integration of ISDN hardware resources in the operating
system.
An important element of IDM is the bonding of existing com-
munication components like RAS to the CAPI-based ISDN so-
lutions. This is achieved using middleware like the AVM ISDN
CAPI Port driver or the AVM NDIS WAN CAPI driver.
The IDM architecture allows for the parallel use of CAPI, mo-
dem and network application functions in ISDN. A particular-
ly important feature is the option of defining and activating
additional functions, for example, integrated data compres-
sion in accordance with V.42bis and Fax G3 service.
