1 Welcome to Alice
Alice is a user-friendly software package for the transmission
and reception of audio and video data. The seamless syn-
chronization of video and sound data through the monitor
and sound card enables speech and moving images to be re-
produced in high quality, both on your computer and the
computer of the remote station.
Alice allows video and sound connections to computers on
which Alice is installed, to video telephones, to video confer-
encing systems and to what are known as content servers
(image information services). Alice offers you several ways of
connecting to a remote site thanks to its support for various
standards. You can connect to an ISDN remote site with a di-
rect ISDN connection over one or two ISDN channels. Alice
uses the H.320 standard for ISDN connections. You can also
establish an IP connection to a remote site using the H.323
standard. It does not matter whether the connection is with-
in a LAN or over the Internet.
If a camera is connected to your computer, you have the op-
tion of transmitting your own local image to the remote site.
Alice can be used to call friends or business partners with
whom video images are to be exchanged to complement a
conversation.
If there is no camera connected to your computer, Alice can
still be used to view video transmissions from remote con-
tent servers.
