Dialing via an Internet Connection
24 Alice – 5 Tips and Tricks
5.3 Dialing via an Internet Connection
In order to connect to a remote site via the Internet, you have
to know its IP address. However, this address is usually as-
signed dynamically when you dial into the Internet Service
Provider. The current IP address of your computer can be
found in the Alice “Information” window. Contact your con-
versation partner by e-mail, chat or telephone and inform
them of the IP address at which you can be reached as long
as the connection is active.
Various Internet Service Providers offer the option of reserv-
ing a fixed host name at which a computer can be reached,
independent of the current IP address (dynamic DNS ser-
vice). Where this option is available, additional software is
implemented on the computer to transmit the IP address as-
signed to a DNS server each time the computer connects to
the Internet. This means that the computer can always be
reached at the same host name.
For more information about dynamic DNS service, please
contact the corresponding provider.
