Multi-Operator Console
System 5’s multi-operator post environment creates one large console that can operated by multiple engineers. In reality, each
section is a unique System 5 console, which supports a maximum number of channels per operator.
The Mix and Solo busses are normally linked across the consoles, while the Aux and Group busses are not. In a two-operator system,
one console usually handles the FX, and the other music and dialogue.
Only one console, designated the Master, uses its monitor matrix. Each operator has a Post Panel located in their section. Although
positioned near a particular operator’s surface, each panel is connected to the Master console network for access to the monitor
matrix.
Solo Linking
Although the consoles are almost entirely independent (i.e., file system, automation system, snapshots, group busses, etc.), the
solo system can be linked across consoles by connecting the System PCs using the unused Ethernet port. This can be done via
a small hub or a single crossover cable. Contact Avid customer support for more information.
Patching
The main patching issue for two-operator consoles is cascading the busses. This is done using the bus cascade inputs on the DSP
Frame.
To patch the Slave Console’s outputs:
1 In PatchNet>Console I/O, select the desired Bus Outputs.
2 Select the desired Frame output from the Destinations section.
3 Press Patch.
To patch the Master Console’s inputs:
1 In PatchNet>Sources, select the desired Frame inputs.
2 In PatchNet>Console I/O, select the Bus Cascade inputs.
3 Press Patch.
Connect a BNC cable between the designated ports on the slave and master consoles. We recommend storing these patches as
PatchNet Presets (see page 26).
