Chapter 12: Dynamic Automation (S5P Only) 143
Punch Preview
Press the Punch Preview key to punch in all parameters in Preview mode at the level set when punched out in the Preview pass.
Activating the Punch Preview key automatically illuminates the Suspend Preview key.
Knobs and Switches
Punching in a knob or switch set to Write Absolute (or Write Trim for the knob) with Preview On permits manual changes to the pa-
rameter, but ignores underlying automation. Pressing the Select/Punch key a second time punches in with the selected automa-
tion mode.
This feature is useful to record an abrupt discontinuous change, such as described below.
To shift the Pan setting from the current setting of extreme left to extreme right:
1 Activate Preview in the center section Automation Panel.
2 Select Write Absolute mode for the Pan knob on the desired Strip.
3 Press the Pan Select/Punch switch and set the control to extreme right.
4 At the appropriate point, press the Select/Punch key again.
The previewed level is recorded from that point until the Select/Punch key is pressed again to punch out.
Faders
Preview for a fader can be initiated by touching the fader or pressing the Select/Punch key. To punch into record from Preview,
press either the fader’s Select/Punch key or the All Match key in the center section.
Preview remains active after the punch out, so the fader stays in manual control until the recorder stops and the pass is complete.
Preview Knobs Only
This option supports entering Preview mode on the knobs only, while writing moves on the faders.
Auto Punch
Auto Punch supports punching in automatically, starting at the time stored in the AR/Start register and ending at the time stored
in the AR/End register (see “Setting Fill Start and End Times” on page 141). When Auto Punch: Locate is turned on (see page 107),
pressing Auto Punch starts automation playback/record at the AR/Start time and stops at the AR/End time.
Rehearse
Reh switches the Control Room monitor source from Mix Bus Outputs (playback) to Mix Bus Returns (input) so you can listen to
the recorder tracks. Reh works only on record-enabled tracks.
Mix Bus Auto Punch
With Mix Bus Auto Punch enabled, automation punches in on all mix sections when any one of them is automated. This reduces
the chances of double bussing a channel by ensuring that the routing change is written across all the stems.
