Fill Features
To understand the utility of System 5’s Fill features, consider this situation:
Fader automation has been recorded from 00:01:00:00 to 00:02:00:00 and from 00:04:00:00 to 00:05:00:00. What initial fader
value should be used if recording or playback begins at 00:03:00:00? Because there is no automation written at this time, it is
called virgin territory.
System 5 derives a fader value using two methods:
First, it looks from the current position back to the beginning of the mix for the last value recorded. In the example above, the
last fader value at the punch-out point (00:02:00:00) would be used.
– or –
Then, it looks from the current position towards the end of the mix for the next recorded fader value.
The Fill features make it unnecessary to do a complete initial pass just to write settings throughout the mix; the engineer can re-
cord only necessary moves.
It is sometimes desirable, though, to write nominal values in all, or selected areas of the mix. System 5’s Fill utilities accomplish
this: AutoFill, Fill Start, Fill End, Fill Region, and Fill to Punch.
