Windows System Settings
To ensure optimum performance with
Pro Tools, you should configure certain Control
Panel settings for your version of Windows XP.
Enabling DMA
Enabling your computer's DMA (Direct Memory
Access) for any IDE/ATA hard drives frees up

other Pro Tools tasks.
In most cases the DMA option will already be set
correctly, as Windows XP detects and activates
DMA mode by default.
To enable DMA:
1 Right-click My Computer and choose Man-
age.
2 Under System Tools, choose Device Manager.
3 In the Device Manager window, double-click
IDE ATA/TAPI controllers, then double-click the
Primary IDE Channel for your IDE hard drive.
4 Click the Advanced Settings tab.
5 For each device, set the Transfer Mode to
“DMA if available,” and click OK.
6 Repeat steps 3–5 for any additional IDE Chan-
nels.
7 Close the Computer Management window.
