Glossary of Key Terms
ATM Interface - is an electronic device that monitors
transactions made on an ATM machine and superim-
poses or overlays this data on the video picture of the
customer making the transaction.
Cash Register Interface - is an electronic device
that monitors transactions made on cash registers and
superimposed or overlays the data on the video of the
cash register.
CAT5 - is a twisted pair (4 twisted pairs in a single
jacket) cable designed for high signal integrity.
Composite Video - The Complete video signal
consisting of the video information, the sync, pulse, and
threshold reference signal.
DSL - Deep Scattering layer; Digital Subscriber Line
Ethernet - A system for connecting a number of com-
puter systems to form a local area network, with proto-
cols to control the passing of information and to avoid
simultaneous transmission by two or more systems.
Exception - Suspicious cash register or ATM trans-
actions that are out of the ordinary and may indicate
theft or fraud. Examples: NO SALE, VOID, REFUND,
DISCOUNT, and EMPLOYEE SALE.
Exception Flagging - The ability to generate an on-
screen flag or indicator when an exception occurs.
Genlocking - An electronic synchronization of two or
more video signals to the same timing and color phase
so they can be mixed and or switched through other
appropriate equipment.
Ground Loop - An unwanted electric current path
in a circuit resulting in stray signals or interference,
occurring , e.g., when two earthed points in the same
circuit have different potentials.
Inventory Shrinkage - Is the loss of products be-
tween point of manufacture to purchase from supplier
and point of sale.
Loss Prevention - Is used to describe a number of
methods used to reduce the amount of all losses and
shrinkage often related to retail trade.
Motion Jpeg - Is an informal name for multimedia
formats where each video frame or interlaced field of
a digital video sequence is separately compressed as
a Jpeg image.
MPEG4 - Is a collection of methods defining com-
pression of audio and visual (AV) digital data.
Multiplexer - is a device that performs multiplexing;
it selects one of many analog or digital data sources
and outputs that source into a single channel.
Network Switch - is a computer networking device
that connects network segments.
Parallel - parallel communications format presents
data in a parallel format to the receiver and then
strobes the receiver when the data is ready. The
receiver reads in the data and processes. This format
is faster than serial communication since more than
one bit is transferred per clock signal.
POS (Point of Sale) - The place at which goods
are retailed.
