Freezing a nd Unf reez i
ng Obj ects
You can freeze any selection of objects in your
scene. By default, frozen objects, whether
wireframe or rendered
,turnadarkgray.They
remain visible, but can’t be selected, and therefore
can’t be directly transformed or modified.
Freezing lets you pr
otect objects from accidenta l
editing and speeds up redraws.

You can choose to have frozen objects retain their
usual color or texture in viewports. Use the Show
Frozen In Gray toggle in the General tab of the
Object Prop erties dia log (page 1–111)
.
Frozen objects are similar to h idden objects.
Linked, instanced, and referenced objects behave
when f rozen just as they would if unf rozen. Frozen
lights and cameras and any associated viewpor ts
continue to work as they normally do.

Fr e ezin g Ob je ct s
You can freeze one or more selected objects. This
is the usual method to put objects "on hold."
You can also freeze al l objects that are not selected.
This method lets you keep only the selected object
active, useful in a cluttered scene, for example,
where you want to be sure no other objects are
affected.
Procedure
To a ccess Freeze options, do one of the fol lowing:
• Open the Display pa nel, then expand
theFreezerollout.
• Choose Tools menu > Display Floater. This
modeless dialog has the same options a s the
Freeze rollout. It also contains Hide options.
• Access the
Object Prop erties dialog (page
1–111)
from either the right-click (quad) menu
or the Edit menu. Tu rn on Hide and/or Freeze.
• In the Layer Manager, click in the Freeze
column to freeze/unfreeze each layer in the list.
• Right-click in the active view port and choose
a Freeze or Unfreeze command from the quad
menu > Display quadrant.
