These are the six panels:
Create panel (page 3–757)
Contains controls for creating objects:
geometr y, cameras, lights, and so on.
Modify panel (page 3–758)
Contains controls for applying modifiers (page
3–974) toobjectsandeditingeditableobjects
such as meshes and patches.
Hierarchy panel (page 3–773)
Cont ains controls for managing links in a
hierarchy, joints, and inverse kinematics.
Motion panel (page 3–774)
Contains controls for animation controllers
and t rajectories.
Display panel (page 3–775)
Contains controls that let you hide and unhide
objects, a long with other display options
Utilities p anel (page 3–778)
Contains miscellaneous utility programs, most
of which are plug-ins to 3ds Max.
By default, the command pa nel appears at t he right
of the 3ds Max window. You can "dock" it along
otheredgesoftheprogramwindow,ormakeita
floating panel. See Customizing the User Interface
(page 3–785).

On the Create p anel, the fields are contained in a
rollout. You c an change an object’s name or color
from an y of these locations.
Interfa ce
Name (text field)—Displaysthenameofthe
selected object and lets you enter a new name from
the keyboard. Avai lable on ly when a single object
is selected.
Color (s wa tch)—Displays the selected object’s
wireframe color and lets you select a new one.
The wireframe color is the one used to display
the object in viewports. C lick t he color swatch to
display the Object Color dialog (page 1–159).

TheCreatepanelprovidesthecontrolsforcreating
objects. This is the first step in building a new
scene in 3ds Max. Most likely, you will continue
to add objects throughout an entire project. F or
example, when it is time to render a scene you
might need to add more lights.
