3ds Max can import the text-based (ASCII)
Wavefront formats OBJ and MTL. An OBJ file
con tains geometry descriptions. A MTL file is also
text based, and contains material descriptions that
supplement the OBJ file.

The ASCII-based OBJ format ma kes it possible
to exchange graphical data between many
applications. Both polygons and freeform
geometries such as cur ves are suppor ted with
these format. You can export 3ds Max fi les to this
format.

Mesh Geometry
When exporting mesh geometry, you can
export triangles, polygons, or quadrilaterals.
•Normalsareexportedbydefault.
Groups
If you choose to group by object, then the
exported information will be organized by
object. This information will be available when
youimportthefilesothatyoucanchoose
certain objects to import rather than the entire
file.
If you select to group by material, then the
exported information will be organized by
materials. When importing, you can select to
only important elements that are associated
with a particular material.
