540 Chapter 20: Managing Scenes and Projects
No Mappi ng Coordina tes—When N o
Mapping Coordinates is use d, the File Link
Manager will not generate texture coordinates
for the mesh objects that are linked.
When drawings are imported, objects are
addedtothesceneasEditableMeshobjects
that do not have UVW coordinate assignments.
Before assig ning materials to imported objects,
you’ll need to apply a
UVW Map mo difier
(page 1–905)
to add texture coordinates. When
youthenapplythematerialandthematerialor
texture map is set to Show Map in Viewport,
the texture map is displayed if the viewport
is set to Smooth + Highlights. If the UVW
Map modifier is not applied, the object turns
gray and you’ll see a
Missing Map Coordinates
dialog (page 2–1433)
when you render the
scene.
This option gives you faster loading speed, but
no UVW coordinate generation.
Gener ate Coordinates For All Obj ects—This
option forces all objects to have UVW
coordinates generated when the drawing is
imported.
This option tells the DWG/DXF Importer to
create UVW coordinates, but loading time
is increased while the coordinate generation
occurs.
Curve StepsAdjusts how smoothly an arc or
cur ve appears w hen the drawing is imported.
Larger numbers result in smoother curves.
Default=10.
Sur face Deviation for 3D Solids—Specifies the
maximum a llowable distance from the 3ds Max
surface mesh to the parametric 3D solid surface.
Small numbers produce more accurate surfaces
with a greater number of faces. Large numbers
produce less accurate surfaces w ith fewer faces.
Geometr y panel: Include group
This group allows you to toggle the inclusion of
specific parts of a drawing file during the import
process.
Ex ter nal R eferences (xr efs)—Imports xrefs attached
to the drawing file.
Hatches—Imports hatches from the drawing file.
Wa rn in g: This stores each line or dot in the hatch
pattern as a separate component of the VIZBlock that
defines the hatch; this can create a very large number of
objects in your scene.
Point s—
Importspointsfromthedrawingfile.
Note: The imported point objects are represented
in 3ds Max as Point Helper objects.
Lights—Importslightsfromthedrawingfile.
Views (cameras)Imports named v iews from
the drawing file, and converts them to 3ds Max
cameras.
UCSs (gr ids )—Imports user coordinate systems
(UCS)fromthedrawingfileandconvertsthem
to 3ds Max grid objects.
Layers panel
This interface is very similar to the
Layer Manager
(page 3–706)
. L ayer names remain the same as
specified in the drawing file.
