its source file. The entities appear in the lower
list, where an entity ca n b e either an object or a
material. Make additional choices at this time if
youlike.Youcancontrolhowtheobjectswill
update (either automatically or on demand).
Updating is done at the file level: all objects and
materials from a single source file ar e updated
atthesametime.
To substitute a proxy object for an XRef object:
With proxy objects, you can avoid loading your
detailed mo del in memory, and speed up the time
of test renderings.
1. Select an XRef object.
2. On the Modify panel > Pro xy rollout, click
theBrowsebutton,andusetheFileOpendialog
tochoosethefilethatcontainstheproxy.
AMergedialogappears.
3. Pick the object to use as a proxy.
When you have picked the proxy object, the
Enable toggle should turn on.
4. Turn on Use In Rendering to use the proxy
object in renderings.
To a dd fu r t her obj ects to an X Ref R ecord:
1.
In the X Ref Objects dialog, highlight an XRef
record (in the top list) that contains objects that
have not a lready been added to the scene.
2. On the Entities List toolbar (the lower
toolbar), click Add Objects.
This button is not available if all of the objects
inthesourcefilehavealreadybeenaddedto
the XRef record.
The XRef Merge dialog appears.
3. Highlight the objects that you want to add as
XRefs, and then click OK.
The selected objects are added. Depending
on the dia log sett ings, materials might also be
added as XRefs.
To change an XR ef object into a scene object:
Highlight the XRef object in the Entities
list (the lower list), and then click Merge In
Scene. The XRef object becomes a full-fledged
object in the scene, giving you access to its
modifier stack.
Tip: This button is also available in the upper
Records list, where it merges
all
entities from
the highlighted source record into the cur rent,
target scene.

The XRef Objects dialog provides the inter face for
loading XRef entities int o your target scene (the
scene where you crea
te the XRefs) from a source
scene(thescenefilethatcontainstheentitiesthat
you want to extern ally reference). XRef entities
can be XRef object
s, XRef materials, and XRef
manipulators. An XRef record can be made up of
one or more XRef entities.
The XRef Objects d

Record section at the top and the XRef Entities
section at the bottom. The XRef Objects dialog
provides contr
ols to add and remove XRef objects,
XRef materials, and XRef manipulators.
When you XRef an object into your scene,
all atmospheri
c effects are carried over, and
optionally, their manipulators and modifiers can
also be merged into your scene.
