independent of the biped motion in your scene,
and can be used in various ways:
•UseConvert From Buffer to try alternate filter
settings quickly; t his saves you from having to
browse for the same file.
• After import ing a BVH or BIP file using
footstep extraction and key reduction, you
can use Paste From Buffer on selected biped
limbs (and COM) to paste keys from the raw
motion-capture data to the fi ltered data; do this
if critical motion has been lost in the filtering
process.
•IfyouspecifyLoadBufferOnlyintheMotion
Capture Conversion P ar ameters dialog (page
2–1070),themotionfileisloadedintothe
motion-capture buffer without a ltering the
biped animation. Use this to p aste posture
and limb keys from any fi le onto the biped
animation in your scene.
When you load a motion-capture file,
themotion-capturebufferisloadedwith
motion-capture data from that file. This buffer is
altered during calibration. It is also used to show
the motion-c apt ure markers and trajectories.
In ternally, there is only one motion-capture buffer.
It is often large, so its contents are not saved before
a file load or a calibration. Therefore, if you undo
amotion-capturefileload,thecontentsofthe
motion-capture buffer do not change. That’s why
yo u’ll still see old markers and trajectories. It is not
possibletoundocalibration.
Mark er Files
Unlike a BIP or B VH file that contains limb
rotation data, a CSM marker file (page 3–969)
contains only marker position data. When a ra w
marker fi le is imported, only marker position data
is buffered in the motion-capture buffer. 3 ds Max
uses the marker data to extract limb rotation data
to position the biped. After using the calibration
controls on the Motion Capture rollout to correct
bipedscaleandposturerelativetothemarkers,use
Convert From Buffer to filter the raw marker data
to key reduce and extract footsteps.
Note: ACSMmarkerfileisanASCIIfile.

Procedures
To use Convert From Buffer:
A motion-capture file should already be in
memory. Use Lo ad Mot ion Capture File
on the Motion Capture rollout to import a
motion-capture file if one is not already be in
memory.
1. Select a biped.
2. On the Motion Capture rollout, click Convert
From Buffer to display the Motion Capture
Conversion Parameters dialog.
3. Adjust parameters, then click OK.
To compare r aw and f ilter ed tr aj ectori es:
1.
SelectabipedandturnonShowBuffer
Trajectory on the Motion Capture rollout.
2. Click Trajectories on the Displa y rollout.
As you select various biped parts, two
trajectories are displayed. The yellow trajector y
represents raw motion capture data in the
motioncapturebuffer;thepurpletrajectory
represents the filtered data.
To use S how B uf fer :
1.
Create a biped.
2. Use Load Motion Capture File on the Motion
Capture rollout to import a motion-capture file.
3. Turn on Show Buffer on the Motion Capture
rollout.
A red stick fig ure appears, representing the r aw
motion-capture data.
