Combining Physique with Other Modifiers 955
Facial expressions animated with Physique and facial bones.
Tip: Hierarchies other than bipeds canβt use
Figure mode, so special consideration is needed
to establish the initial skeletal pose. Position the
facial bones in the βat restβ position at f rame 0,
and start keyf raming the face at frame 1 or later.
You can perform lip synch animation by loading a
sound track in Track View. By scrubbing the time
slider, you can locate a sound and keyframe the
dummies t o appro priate positions.
You can find a model set up for facial
animationinthefile
girlface.max
in the
cstudio\tutorials\advanced_physique
folder in
your 3ds Max path. You can access this file only
if you have installed tutorials on your hard disk.
For information on installing tutorials, see the
Installation Guide
.
Procedure
To isolate lip vertices from influence by inappropriate
links:
When working w ith a complicated facial bone
struc ture, envelopes for the lower lip are bound
to affect vertices in the upper lip, and vice versa.
In general, this ca n be corrected in at the Vertex
sub-object level:
1. SelecttheheadandontheModifypanelgoto
the Vertex sub-object level.
2. TurnonInitialSkeletalPose
3. Turn on Select, region-select vertices of the
lower lip, then click Remove From Link.
4. Selectthelinksoftheupperlip,andclickLock
Assignments.
5. Region-select vertices of the upper lip, and click
Remove From Link.
6. Select links of the lower lip, and click Lock
Assignments.
Phy sique and Modi fier s
Combining Physique with Other
Modifiers
Although you can apply Ph ysique to an object
w ith modifiers, this can affect performance. If
you use other animated modifiers in combination
w ith Physique, this reduction is unavoidable. If the
other modifiers are not animated, you can collapse
the stack to remove modifiers prior to Physique.
This can significantly improve per formance.
HowPhysiquereevaluatesverticescomingupthe
stack depends on the stack update options.

to determine how Ph ysique handles
animated vertices coming up the modifier stack.
Add Change
A dd Change adds in the changes from the
stack and then applies mesh deformation. No
