Motion Capture Rollout 917
Motion-Capture Buffer
Rawmotiondataisautomaticallystoredinthe
motion-capture buffer when files (CSM, BVH, and
BIP) are loaded us ing
Load Motion Capture File
(page 2–916)
.Thisbufferedrawmotiondatais
independent of the biped motion in your scene,
and can be used in various ways:
•Use
Convert From Buffer
to try alternate filter
settings quickly ; this saves you from having to
browse for the same file.
• After impor ting a BV H or BIP file using
footstep extraction and key reduction, you
can use
Paste From Buffer
on selected biped
limbs (and COM) to paste keys from the raw
motion-capture data to the filtered data; do this
if critical motion has been lost in the filtering
process.
• IfyouspecifyLoadBufferOnlyinthe
Motion
Capture Conversion Parameters dialog (page
2–922)
, the motion file is loaded into the
motion-capture buffer without altering the
biped animation. Use this to p aste posture
and limb keys from any file onto the biped
animation in your scene.
When y ou load a motion-capture file,
themotion-capturebufferisloadedwith
motion-capture data from that file. This buffer is
altered during calibration. It is also used to show
the motion-capture markers and trajec tories.
In ternally, there is only one motion-capture buffer.
It is often large, so its contents are not saved before
a file load or a calibration. Therefore, if you undo
amotion-capturefileload,thecontentsofthe
motion-capture buffer do not change. That’s why
yo u’ll still see old markers and trajectories. It is not
possibletoundocalibration.
Mark er Files
Unlike a BIP or BVH file that contains limb
rotation data, a
CSM marker file (page 3–1063)
contains only marker position data. When a raw
marker file is imported, only marker position data
is buffered in the mot ion-capture buffer. 3ds Max
uses the marker data to extract limb rotation data
to position the biped. After using the c alibration
controls on the Motion Capture rollout to correct
bipedscaleandposturerelativetothemarkers,use
Convert From Buffer
to filter the raw marker data
to key reduce and extract footsteps.
Note: ACSMmarkerfileisanASCIIfile.

Procedures
To use Convert From Buffer:
A mot ion-capture file should already be in
memory. Use Load Motion Capture File
on the Motion Capture rollout to import a
motion-capture file if one is not already be in
memory.
1. Select a biped.
2. On the Motion Capture rollout, click C onvert
From Buffer to display the Motion Capture
Conversion Parameters dialog.
3. Adjust parameters, then click OK.
To compare r aw a nd fi lter ed tra j ectories :
1.
SelectabipedandturnonShowBuffer
Trajectory on the Motion Capture rollout.
2. Click Trajectories on the Display rollout.
As y ou select various biped parts, two
trajectories are displayed. The yellow t r ajector y
represents raw m otion capture data in the
motioncapturebuffer;thepurpletrajectory
represents the filtered data.
To use S how B uf fer :
1.
Create a biped.
