source file. You can set the mater ial properties
only in the source file. When you change them
inthesourcefileandthensaveit,thematerials
appearance can change in the target fi le that
contains the XRef.
Note: If an XRef object has a material applied to
itintheoriginalsourcefile(andMergeMaterials
is turned off when you reference the source file),
then that material is automatically XRefed in the
scene, and appears in the Material Editor if you
browse from the scene. When you explicitly use
the Material Editor to create an XRef material,
you don’t have to have any XRef objects from
that particular source file. However, the source
file (record) and material
do
appear in the
XRef
Objects dialog (page 3–408)
.
The Show Map In Viewport button works for an
XRef m aterial only if the same button is tur ned on
in the source file. Otherwise, it is disabled.

File Name controls

this field displays the MAX scene’s full path name.

After you choose the file, 3ds Max displays a

material you want to reference.
Object controls
Object na me—When you have chosen a source file
and object, this field displays the object’s name.

Object name and materialWhen you have chosen
asourcefileandobject,thisfielddisplaysthe
object name followed by the material name, in
parentheses. For example, “Shaker ( Chrome ).
Browse for object—Click to display a Merge
dialog and choose the object whose material you

Status line—D isplays the status of the material. For
example,ifthefileandobjectarebothfound,this
field says Status: XRef Resolved.

The most common use for

is to improve the appearance and realism of
