MAINTAIN A COMPACT DISK (CD) PLAYER
113-575-3052
Conditions: In a tactical or garrison environment, given a CD player, audio amplifier, speakers, pure
isopropyl alcohol, lens tissue, cotton swabs, soft dry cloth, lint-free cloth, mild detergent, degreaser,
contact cleaner, light oil, silicon grease, clean water, photographic-type air bulb, electronic equipment tool
kit, CDs with protective cases, soft felt-tip marker, bench stock (for replacement belts), DA Form 2404, DA
Form 2407, DD Form 314, DA Pam 738-750, and manufacturers' manuals.
Standards: The standards are met when the CD player is clean and operates without malfunction.
Performance Measures Results
1. Observe CD-handling precautions. P F
a. Protect discs from dust, scratches, and fingerprints to improve disc performance. P F
b. Wipe discs with a soft, dry cloth dampened with water (and a mild detergent if
necessary) from the center to the edge. Gently dry with a lint-free cloth.
P F
CAUTION: Do not use chemically treated cloths or solvents. Do not use a dry cloth to clean
as any dirt particles will result in scratches. Hard-tipped and ballpoint pens can damage the
disc's recording and playback performance.
c. Return discs to their protective cases when not in use. Do not store discs in direct
sunlight or in hot or humid places.
P F
d. To label discs, write only on the preprinted side using a soft, felt-tip marker. P F
NOTE: Disc recognition and play problems include erratic loading, tracking problems (audio
noise, skipping, sticking, taking longer than usual to recognize a disc or complete a search),
aborting at random, refusal to play, and the door not opening.
2. Recognize indications that the CD player requires cleaning or other preventive or
corrective maintenance.
P F
3. Turn OFF CD player power. P F
4. If mounted, disconnect cables and remove the CD player from the system. Gain
access to the optical pickup lens by removing necessary paneling or cover.
P F
5. Clean the lens. P F
a. Gently blow out dust or dirt inside the lens assembly with a photographic-type air
bulb.
P F
b. Gently clean the lens with lens tissue or cotton swabs. If using alcohol, dry
everything quickly.
P F
CAUTION: Do not scratch or damage the lens when cleaning.
6. Inspect mechanical parts for dried-up (or lack of) lubrication and damage. P F
a. Load a CD to test the drawer mechanism and sled drive for free movement; clean
and lubricate with silicone grease as necessary.
P F
b. Check for dirt in the optical pickup worm. Lubricate (with silicone grease) the
gears that move the optical pickup, if necessary.
P F
c. Check and clean (with light oil) motor and spindle bearings as necessary. P F
d. Replace worn or fractured gears, brackets, and mountings. P F
7. Check the appearance of drive belts and pulleys. P F
a. If oily, clean with isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs. Dry quickly to avoid
damaging rubber belts.
P F
b. Replace loose or worn belts. P F
8. Replace any paneling or cover removed to gain access to the lens. P F
9. Tighten and secure all audio connections to minimize intermittent or noisy sound. P F
