STP 11-25R13-SM-TG
Glossary - 23
A transmitter-receiver that uses many of the same components for both transmission and reception.
transformer (XFMR)
A transformer converts electrical power from one voltage current level to another voltage current level.
transient
A signal which endures for a brief time prior to the attainment of a steady state condition. These may
include overshoots, damped sinusoidal waves, etc., and therefore, additional qualifying information is
necessary.
vectorscope (V/S)
A device for measuring vector relationships between the various color signals being transmitted as well
as the amount of saturation present.
vertical blanking interval (VBI)
The blanking portion at the beginning of each field. It contains the equalizing pulses, the vertical sync
pulses, and VITS. Presently 18 to 21 lines in duration.
vertical-interval reference signal (VIRS)
A signal used as a reference for amplitude and phase characteristics of a color television program to
reproduce a picture. The VIRS is used to certify the original signal as to luminance and chrominance,
chrominance amplitude, and chrominance phase relative to burst.
vertical-interval test signal (VITS)
A signal that may be included during the vertical blanking interval to permit in-service testing and
adjustment of video transmission.
video
A term pertaining to the bandwidth and spectrum position of the signal which results from television
scanning and which is used to reproduce a picture.
VITS
vertical interval test signal, a signal which may be included during the vertical blanking interval to permit
in-service testing and adjustment of video transmission
waveform
Graphic representation of how voltage and current change in amplitude and direction over a period of
time.
wow
A distortion in reproduced sound consisting of a slow rise and fall of pitch caused by speed variation in
the reproducing system.
XLR
3-pin audio connector.
