Glossary - 20
megabyte (Mb)
A unit of information equal to 1,048,576 bytes (usually rounded to 1,000,000 bytes).
megahertz (MHz)
A unit of frequency equal to 1 million hertz.
modem (MODulator or DEModulator)
A device that converts signals from one form to a form compatible with another kind of equipment.
moire
A wavy or satiny effect produced by convergence of lines. This usually appears as a curving of the lines
in the horizontal wedges of the test pattern and is most pronounced near the center where the lines
forming the wedges converge. A moire pattern is a natural optical effect when converging lines in the
picture are nearly parallel to the scanning lines. This effect, to a degree, is sometimes due to the
characteristics of color picture tubes and of image orthicon pickup tubes (in the latter termed meshbeat).
monitor
(1) A television-like device used in conjunction with a microcomputer or terminal for user/computer
interaction capability (referred also as screen, video). (2) A unit of equipment that displays on the face
of a picture tube, the images detected and transmitted by a television camera.
MONO
(1) Single channel of audio. (2) Monochrome, as in a black and white video signal.
monochrome signal
A signal wave for controlling the brightness values in a picture.
National Television Standards Committee (NTSC)
An industry-wide engineering group that, during 1950-1953, developed the color television specifications
now established in the United States.
negative signal
Refers to a picture signal having a polarity which is opposite to normal polarity and which results in a
picture in which the white areas appear as black and vice versa.
noise
Random spurts of electrical energy or interference. May produce a snowy picture.
ohm
Unit of electrical resistance.
oscilloscope
An instrument in which the variations in a fluctuating electrical quantity appear temporary as a visible
wave form on the fluorescent screen of a cathode-ray tube.
overshoot
An excessive response to an unidirectional signal change.
parabola
Locus of points equidistant from a fixed point and straight line.
peak-to-peak (P-P)
The amplitude difference between the most positive and the most negative excursions of an electrical
signal.
