Glossary - 16
decibel(s) (dBu)
With reference to a power of 1 microvolt.
degaussing
The process of driving out and exhausting the gases of an electron tube occluded in its internal parts.
differential gain
The difference in output amplitude of small, high frequency sine wave signals at two stated levels of a low
frequency signal on which it is superimposed.
differential phase
The difference in output phase of small, high frequency sine wave signals at two stated levels of low
frequency signals on which it is superimposed
dimension (DIM)
Control on an audio console.
diode
A rectifier that consists of a semiconducting crystal with two terminals and that is analogous in use to an
electron tube diode.
direct current (DC)
An electric current flowing in one direction only and substantially constant in value.
distortion
The deviation of the received signal waveform from that of the original transmitted waveform.
distribution amplifier (DA)
An amplifier, either radio frequency or audio frequency, having one input and two or more isolated
outputs.
downtime
Time during which an electronic circuit or system is not operational.
dual-in-line (DIP)
A familiar type of integrated circuit.
dummy load
A very useful device used for testing transmitters and antenna systems off the air so no interference will
be caused on the frequencies at which testing is carried out. Also, known as terminating load.
earth ground
A connection from an electrical circuit or equipment to the earth through a metal rod driven into the earth
electronics-to-electronics (E-E)
Mode of VCR operation in which the input is processed and sent to the output, bypassing the record and
playback circuitry.
equalizer
A high fidelity circuit used to tailor the frequency response of an audio system.
