capacitance
The ability of an object to store an electric charge. Capacitance is represented by the capital letter C in
equations and is measured in units called farads.
capacitive reactance
The amount of opposition a capacitor offers to alternating current.
capacitor (C)
An electronic component capable of storing electrical energy when charged. A capacitor blocks the flow
of direct current.
cathode
The electron-emitting electrode in a cacuum tube. In an electron tube, the electrode through which a
primary source of electrons enter the interelectrode space. When a semiconductor diode is biased in the
forward direction, the terminal of the diode which is negative with respect to the other terminal.
cathode-ray tube (CRT)
Component for obtaining a graphic display of an electronic function such as a waveform or spectral
display.
character generator (CG)
Any circuit that accepts alphabetic numeric symbols and punctuation, as well as nonstandard symbols,
and converts them into a binary code.
charge-coupled device (CCD)
Also called chip, a small, solid state imaging device used in cameras instead of a camera pickup tube.
Within the device, image-sensing elements translate the optical image into a video signal.
chroma
Chromaticity. A combination of color hue and saturation.
chroma keying
The process of overlying one video signal over another, the overlay being defined by a specific range of
color, or chrominance, on one of the signals.
chrominance
That property of light which produces a sensation of color in the human eye apart from any variation in
luminance that may be present.
chrominance signal
That portion of the color television signal which contains the color information.
clamping
The process that establishes a fixed level for the picture signal at the beginning of each scanning line.
clipping
The shearing off of the peaks of a signal. For a picture signal, this may affect either the positive (white) or
negative (black) peaks.
color bars
A test signal, typically containing eight basic colors: white, yellow, cyan, green, magenta, red, blue, and
black, which is used to check chrominance functions of color television systems.
