Glossary - 13
bandwidth
Term used to define the frequency occupied by a signal and required for the effective transfer of
information to be carried by that signal.
bar pattern
A pattern of repeating lines or bars on a television screen
baud
A variable unit of data transmission speed usually equal to one bit per second.
benzene
A colorless volatile flammable toxic liquid.
bias
(1) A voltage applied to a device (as a transistor controlled electrode) to establish a reference level for
operation. (2) A high frequency voltage combined with an audio signal to reduce distortion in tape
recording.
black burst (BB)
A signal consisting of composite sync and burst, normally has setup.
blanking
The process of making a channel or device noneffective for the desired interval. A pulse that cuts off the
receiver picture tube during return traces.
block diagram
A circuit diagram showing the general configuration of a piece of electronic equipment without showing
the individual components. Lines or arrows may indicate the path of the signal or energy.
blooming
An increase in the size of the scanning spot (picture) on the cathode-ray tube caused by defocusing (in
white areas) as brightness increases. The result is expansion and consequent distortion of the image.
booster amplifier
A circuit used to increase the output current or the voltage capabilities of an operational amplifier circuit
without loss of accuracy
bounce
An unnatural sudden variation in the brightness of the picture
breathing
Amplitude variations similar to "bounce" but at a slow regular rate.
breezeway
The portion of the back porch between the trailing edge of the sync pulse and the start of the color burst.
B-Y
A color difference signal obtained by subtracting the luminance signal from the blue camera signal.
calibration (CAL)
Adjustment of a measuring instrument for an accurate indication.
candlepower
Luminous intensity expressed in terms of standard candles.
