APPENDIX V – INTERNATIONAL MARITIME SATELLITE (INMARSAT)
V-1. The Magnaphone 2020P.
a. Introduction.
(1) The MX 2020P Magnaphone is Magnavox's affordable, high performance, satellite telephone.
Its compact, single-case design makes the Magnaphone particularly appropriate for land-based
applications that require portability and rapid deployment. Yet despite its low price, the Magnaphone
comes with many advanced features not found on other systems. The Magnaphone provides crystal
clear voice, telex, facsimile, and data communications to and from virtually any point on earth using the
INMARSAT system. It can serve as a lifeline for individuals who must never be beyond reach.
(2) The new magnaphone literally defines the term portable. At about 50 pounds and less than 2
cubic feet, it is the lightest and most compact system on the market. The magnaphone fits neatly into its
single lightweight, soft case or ruggedized, easy-to-carry transit case that is acceptable as airline
baggage by commercial carriers. The system can be set up quickly and easily and is durable enough to
withstand even the most extreme environments.
b. Components. The Magnaphone is designed as a totally unified integrated body requiring
virtually no assembly. It is comprised of two major components: The transceiver, configured with either
fold out umbrella antenna or two section aluminum dish, and the executive telephone or control console.
(1) The transceiver contains the power supply, printed circuit modules, and antenna assembly in-
terfaces. It has built-in, spring loaded legs that fold out to provide stable footing. The collapsible umbrella
antenna is connected to the transceiver and easily unfolds into place. Alternately, the aluminum dish is
easily mounted onto the transceiver in a matter of minutes. The Magnaphone can be removed from its
case and made operational in less than three minutes. Calls can be placed as soon as satellite lock is
obtained.
(2) The control console serves as a full functioning communications center. It has a four line by forty-
character LCD display, speakerphone with handset, compact keyboard, and may be configured with telex
and printer devices. The control console can operate remotely, at a distance of up to 150 meters from the
transceiver. Menu-driven software, with context sensitive help, makes the Magnaphone very accessible
and easy to operate. Even an inexperienced operator will find it easier to place a call from a foreign country
than with an ordinary telephone, where a myriad of languages and protocols can make simple calls difficult.
Despite its small size, the Magnaphone offers many standard features, like automatic selection of land earth
stations (LESs) that on competitive systems are expensive options or are not available at all.
c. General Information. The Magnaphone is an invaluable tool especially in areas where
telephone service is unreliable, disabled, or nonexistent. The Magnaphone is the culmination of years of
research and development by the engineers at Magnavox. It is the most affordable, flexible, compact,
and lightweight, portable satellite telephone on the market today and will be for years to come.
