to determine the proper type of shielding to be used and its effectiveness with the particular source of
radiation used. These handbooks are available from the Superintendent of Documents, US Government
Printing Office.
(6) Radioactive material can enter the human body through ingestion, inhalation, and absorption
through the skin, cuts, or wounds. The following precautionary measures shall be followed to minimize
internal radiation hazards:
(a) Eating, drinking, or smoking will not be permitted in the radiation work area.
(b) Work areas will be kept clean to minimize dust levels. No dry sweeping is permitted.
(c) Gloves and proper protective clothing will be worn as required when handling radioactive
material. The RPO will recommend the type and to what extent protective clothing and equipment will be
used.
(d) Personnel will monitor themselves with radiacmeters before leaving a nonsealed radioactive
source area.
(7) Personnel engaged in handling, storing, installing, or otherwise processing radioactive items will
observe the following rules.
(a) Persons under 18 years old, females known to be pregnant, and persons having cuts,
abrasions, or open sores will not be permitted to enter or work in the controlled area.
(b) Personnel entering the controlled area will wear film badges. Film badge service will be
obtained in accordance with SB 11-206. Visitors and emergency personnel should obtain spare film
badges for use. Radiation survey meters (AN/PDR-27 or equivalent) will be used to monitor the
controlled area when personnel are at work.
(c) Storage or use of food, beverages, tobacco, and cosmetics in areas where radioactive items
are stored or processed is prohibited.
(d) Personnel will not tamper with radioactive items or deliberately expose radioactive materials in
any way. If an item has spilled, become broken, or become unsealed, follow the procedures given in
31b(2) above.
(e) Defective radioactive items not listed as repairable in the applicable technical manual will be
disposed of as radioactive waste in accordance with AR 385-11 and TM 3-261. Defective units listed as
repairable in the applicable technical manual will be shipped to installations authorized under AR 385-11
to perform the repair (TB MED 522).
(f) Personnel will not carry radioactive items in pockets of their clothing.
(g) Persons who handle defective or broken items should be monitored before leaving the
controlled area (TM 3-261, TB MED 522, and TB 700-3). If contaminated, hands, skin, and nails will be
cleaned and scrubbed. Monitoring will be accomplished with an appropriate radiacmeter and ultraviolet
lamp. The survey meters will be used with earphones to permit audible indication to supplement needle
response. Clothing may be reworn if contamination levels do not exceed permissible limits listed in AR
700-64. Special laundry facilities are required for contaminated protective clothing if contamination levels
exceed permissible limits shown in AR 700-64.
(h) When an individual is found to be contaminated, another individual with an appropriate
radiacmeter (TM 3-261) will accompany him to a decontamination area. The second individual will
monitor the contaminated individual for decontamination progress and effectiveness.
