(1) If an interlock has a bypass position, this position should be used only when power is required
during open door testing. Be extremely careful when interlocks are bypassed.
(2) If an interlock does not have a built-in bypass position, do not bypass the interlock with a
jumper or other device. The designer because of internally exposed points carrying over 500 volts has
intentionally omitted the bypass.
(3) Do not rely on an interlock to shut off power. Always turn power off with the main power switch
and disconnect the power cord before opening equipment.
u. Steel-toe shoes, or other approved safety-type foot protection, should be worn by all employees
engaged in material handling operations designated as hazardous to feet or toes of employees.
Recommended shoes are included in American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Safety Standard
Z41.1-1967.
Section III. ELECTROMAGNETIC EQUIPMENT
T-16. General.
The safety precautions applicable to electronic equipment (Section II above) also apply to
electromagnetic equipment.
T-17. Infrared Calibration.
Calibration personnel will exercise the safety precautions as set forth in paragraph 18 below and in
TB MED 279 and AR 40-46. Where external mechanical vane-type choppers present a hazard, take
precautions to prevent harm to personnel, e.g., the use of protective guards, prohibition of loose clothing,
long sleeve shirts, etc.
T-18. High Intensity Light Sources.
a. Permanent eye damage can result from direct viewing of high intensity light radiation sources.
Although it is not possible to draw a fine line that would identify light radiation sources that should be
considered hazardous, as a rule the following should be considered high intensity light sources:
(1) All arc lamps: mercury, xenon, etc.
(2) Single incandescent sources of 400 watts or greater power consumption.
(3) Any lamp with quartz envelop since it can emit dangerous ultraviolet.
(4) Lamps used in searchlights.
(5) Lamps used as infrared sources in equipment.
(6) Solar simulators.
(7) Welders arc.
(8) Electric arc furnace.
