NOTE: Demagnetizing removes residual magnetic fields that build up on ferrous pole pieces
of tape heads, various guide posts, and other parts in the tape path that may affect
frequency response.
a. Cover the demagnetizer tips with cellophane tape or other soft material to prevent
damaging finely polished surfaces in the tape transport.
P F
b. Connect the demagnetizer to a 110 VAC power source. P F
c. Turn ON the demagnetizer at a distance of at least 2 feet away from the audio
heads.
P F
d. Move the demagnetizer in a slow circular motion within 1/8-inch of the tape heads
and contact surfaces.
P F
NOTE: Moving fast makes the magnetic fields stronger.
e. Move the demagnetizer tips up and down several times in a slow and even motion
with 1/2-inch of the head.
P F
f. Slowly withdraw the demagnetizer in a circular motion. P F
g. Turn OFF the demagnetizer at a distance of at least 2 feet away from the heads. P F
9. Operations check the ATR for proper recording and playback. P F
a. Turn ON the ATR power. P F
b. Test all front panel and remote control functions. P F
c. Insert and PLAY a prerecorded test tape. Check that the tape does not bind or
stick and listen for proper sound.
P F
d. Insert and RECORD on a blank tape. P F
e. PLAY the recorded tape and listen for proper sound. P F
10. Complete the necessary maintenance forms. P F
a. Annotate service performed on DD Form 314. P F
b. Document uncorrected faults and parts required on DA Form 2404; date and initial
if no problems exist.
P F
c. Initiate a DA Form 2407 if any problem requires corrective maintenance. P F
Evaluation Guidance: Score the soldier a GO if all steps are passed (P). Score the soldier a NO-GO if
any step is failed (F). If the soldier fails any step, show what was done wrong and how to do it correctly.
Have the soldier practice until he can correctly perform the task.
