Skill Level 1
Subject Area 1: MAINTENANCE
PERFORM PMCS ON AN ANALOG TAPE RECORDER/REPRODUCER (ATR)
113-575-3057
Conditions: In a tactical or garrison environment, given an analog ATR, audio amplifier, speakers, audio
test signal generator (ATSG), associated cables, prerecorded and blank test tapes, cotton swabs,
chamois or lint-free cloth, pure isopropyl alcohol, rubber cleaner or rejuvenator, cellophane tape,
demagnetizer, paper towels, general-purpose or glass cleaner, silicone lubricant, light machine oil, bench
stock (for replacement parts), manufacturers' manuals, DD Form 314, DA Form 2404, DA Form 2407,
and DA Pam 738-750.
Standards: The standards are met when the ATR tape path is free of debris, oxide, and residual
magnetism and operates without a problem.
Performance Measures Results
1. Turn OFF the ATR and disconnect the power cord from the AC outlet. P F
2. Clean dust, dirt, and foreign debris from the exterior of the ATR with paper towels
dampened with cleaning spray.
P F
3. Remove the tape head cover and position the ATR for access to clean the tape path. P F
4. Clean the heads, tape guideposts, and capstan using cotton swabs or chamois
dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Use as many swabs as necessary to remove oxide
and other foreign matter.
P F
5. Clean the pinch roller with cotton swabs dampened with rubber cleaner. P F
a. Clean the roller until no more black residue comes off, using as many swabs as
necessary.
P F
b. Replace the roller if it is still hard, shiny, or cracked. P F
6. Clean rubber drive belts. P F
a. Clean belts with swabs or a lint-free cloth dampened with rubber cleaner. P F
NOTE: If cleaning with alcohol, dry quickly to avoid degrading rubber surfaces.
b. Replace stretched or damaged belts. A stretched belt does not return instantly to
its relaxed size when stretched by approximately 25 percent.
P F
7. Inspect the lubrication of the threading transport (capstan, motor, lever, gear shaft,
threading ring, and cam assemblies).
P F
a. Disassemble and clean out old lubricant before applying fresh oil or grease. P F
b. Apply a light machine oil on gear and wheel shafts, as well as bearings and pivots. P F
c. Apply a plastic, safe grease-like silicone lubricant to gears, cams, mechanical-type
mode selectors, sliding parts, and gear teeth.
P F
8. Demagnetize tape heads and contact surfaces to improve sound quality and frequency
response.
