a. Accessories.
The various accessories available for the soldering station make it suitable for such work as
controlled desoldering of any solder joint configuration, printed circuit board (PCB) machining, conformal
coating removal, high strength reflow soldering, and accurate component lead forming. In addition, a
two-position foot pedal switch allows hands-free application of power to the various tools in the system.
This is of great advantage in applications that require intermittent or timed operation, such as vacuum
desoldering and fine control of the machining hand piece.
(1) The solder extractor utilizes controlled temperature, pressure vacuum, and airflow for easy
removal of virtually any type of solder joint.
(2) The Lapflo iron is a current-controlled soldering iron used for heat-sensitive devices only.
b. Soldering tools and aids.
(1) Soldering tips are available in many shapes and sizes, however, the most common tips used for
general soldering are the chisel, pyramid, and screwdriver (Figure A-2). The job to be done will
determine the size and shape of the tip used.

(2) Insulation strippers, commonly called wire strippers, are used to remove the insulated covering
from electrical wire. There are two basic types of wire strippers; thermal (Figure A-3) and precision
cutting (Figure A-4). The thermal-type strippers are used for any type wire. Do not use the precision-
cutting type on Teflon-coated wire unless specifically designed for that purpose.
