A - 2
Carelessness and the disregard of safety regulations are the two major causes of accidents. Failure
to observe a simple safety precaution can result in lost work hours, serious injury, ruined equipment, and
even death. Reduce the probability of receiving a serious injury or burn by using common sense and by
observing the following safety precautions:
a. Exercise caution when handling soldering irons.
b. Support large work pieces securely while soldering.
c. Use proper eye protection when soldering (must meet the American National Standards
Institute (ANSI) and Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) standards).
d. Do not flick solder from the tip of the soldering iron; bits of solder can cause serious skin and
eye burns.
e. Use proper respiratory protection as required.
f. Solder only in a well-ventilated area. Toxic vapors may be present from flux and degreasing
solvents.
g. Never rest a hot soldering iron on a wooden bench or chair.
h. Do not wear rings and watches while soldering.
i. Never attempt to solder a live circuit. Unplug the power cord before soldering.
j. Do not allow prolonged skin contact with degreasing solvents or flux.
k. Wash hands thoroughly before eating or smoking.
l. Disconnect soldering irons from power source when unattended.
A-5. Soldering Equipment.
The soldering station is an advanced, self-contained repair system designed for good quality
precision soldering work. The station consists of a power source, housed in a strong aluminum case, and
accessories. The power source supplies two variable output AC power receptacles, universal and DC
output jacks, quick-connect vacuum and pressure fittings, and provisions for fitting an accessory flexible
shaft-machining hand piece.
WARNING
Never use the soldering system on energized circuits, because
the power source grounds both the iron tip and the vacuum
desoldering extractor tip.
