INSTALL A REMOTE BROADCAST SITE

Conditions: In a tactical or garrison environment, given a broadcast production system equipped with
monitoring and processing equipment, antenna mast with waveguide, power generators, transmitter
trailer, wood chock blocks, audio and video cables, telephone cords, power cables, electronic equipment
tool kit, manufacturers' manuals, and daily activity log. Given one safety observer on site and a
technician at the studio to coordinate and establish the feed.
Standards: The standards are met when the remote broadcast site is installed and established with the
transmission of the broadcast signal with no technical difficulties.
Performance Measures Results
1. Test all equipment prior to deployment. P F
2. Arrive on site at least two hours prior to the event time. P F
3. Set up the equipment in the desired location at least one and a half hours prior to the
start of the remote broadcast.

a. Assemble and connect technical equipment required. P F
b. Operations check equipment to ensure operational readiness. P F
NOTE: The following performance measures pertain to an audio only broadcast.
4. Establish a clear phone line connection between the remote site and the studio. P F
5. Adjust and send tone, 1 kHz at +4 dBm, to the studio through the phone line. P F
NOTE: At the studio, the studio technician observes the VU meters and adjusts the remote
feed level control to 0 VU. After taking the remote signal live, the technician monitors the off-
air signal. In the event of signal loss, the technician airs an alternative source.
6. Dress and tie down cables for a neat, professional appearance as well as preventing
cables from being tripped over; thus preventing possible damage to equipment and loss
of signal.

Evaluation Guidance: Score the soldier a GO if all steps are passed (P). Score the soldier a NO-GO if
any step is failed (F). If the soldier fails any step, show what was done wrong and how to do it correctly.
Have the soldier practice until he can correctly perform the task.
