The Audi S8 has a V8 4.0 TFSI power unit that
features the new innovative Audi cylinder on
demand. It ensures that during partial load
operation, only four of eight cylinders are used –
without you noticing the difference. The engine
always runs smoothly and powerfully, but uses
less fuel and emits less CO₂.
We describe its mode of operation as “intelli -
gent performance”. Audi cylinder on demand
specifi cally only closes certain cylinders, two
each per cylinder bank. As a result the engine
runs impressively smoothly even during partial
load opera tion. The decision to switch off
cylinders depends on a combination of factors:
the engine speed must be between 930 and
3,500 rpm, the vehicle must be travelling at
a minimum speed of 25 km/h and you must
be driving in third gear or higher. If you then
do not need the full power of eight cylinders,
the Audi valvelift system closes the intake and
outlet valves and switches off the injection
and ignition of the corresponding cylinders.
This means that no air is taken in, no fuel is
injected and no exhaust gas is emitted. Or in
other words: the consump tion and emission
values are noticeably im proved. In addition,
the V8 4.0 TFSI engine features a start-stop
system and recuperation and of course fulfils
the EU5 emission standard. The power unit
works with the Audi valvelift system which
generates a higher torque – whilst consuming
less fuel. The quattro® permanent all-wheel
drive with sports differential supports the
sporty potential of the power train.
Thanks to its very spontaneous responsiveness
and exceptional power delivery across the entire
speed range, the eight-cylinder engine promotes
a sporty superior driving style. Its 382 kW
accelerate the S8 at a torque of 650 Nm from
0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds. At 250 km/h
the engine is electronically regulated.
