The 8-piston fixed calipers of the standard
18-inch high-performance braking system exert
a powerful action on the front axle. Single-piston
floating calipers are used at the rear. The brake
discs consist of a cast friction ring that is con-
nected to the aluminium brake disc chamber with
steel pins. This so-called floating mounting en-
sures that the friction ring remains largely free of
stress, thereby improving fatigue strength in ex-
treme temperatures. The axial perforation of the
discs and the cooling channels for interior venti-
lation also increase the performance of the brake
discs. The use of aluminium not only reduces the
weight of the brake discs but also improves the
weight balance of the unsprung masses.
And for even tougher conditions, there is the
optional 19-inch ceramic brake system featur-
ing 6-piston fixed calipers. On this system, the
brake discs for the front axle are made of carbon
fibre-reinforced ceramics. A hard and abrasion-
resistant silicon carbide into which high-strength
carbon fibres are embedded forms the base
material. This results in both extremely high
abrasion resistance, enabling a long service life
to be achieved, and insensitivity to high thermal
stresses. Furthermore, the material offers a
weight advantage over steel discs.
Nothing can stop a
high-performance athlete.
