One in every two Audi cars sold today is a diesel
.
What sounds perfectly normal now was
cause for
huge excitement 20 years ago, when Audi revo-
lutionised
the market with the first 2.5 litre TDI
engine. Since then, developments such as common
rail
technology have made TDI even more effi-
cient.
Piezo injectors ensure the fuel is finely and
precisely distributed
. Consequently, since the
first TDI,
the engines have become around 30%
more economical, whilst specific output has in-
creased.
So it was only logical that a diesel
car
should then enter the world
of motorsport. With
great success: in 2006, the Audi
R10 TDI became
the world's first
diesel powered race car to win the
Le Mans 24 Hours – a victory
which it has repeated
several times over, most recently in 2010.
Two powerful TDI versions are available for the
Audi A7 Sportback, which of course operate with
intelligent common rail diesel technology. With a
hefty 500 Nm of torque, the 180 kW 3.0 TDI
quattro accelerates your A7 Sportback from
0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. And the 150 kW
3.0 TDI, with an extremely low consumption of
5.3 l and CO₂ emissions of just 139 g, proves that
efficiency does not prevent driving pleasure.
The fuel consumption and CO₂ emission figures can be found on page 82.
3.0 TDI engine (180 kW)
Exhaust gas turbocharger with optimised adjustable
turbine geometry
1,800 bar high-pressure injection system
Engine with reduced friction
Pressure-regulated oil pump
Innovative thermal management with separate cooling
system for cylinder head casing/cylinder head
The piezo injectors open and close
in fractions of a millisecond and in-
ject fuel several times into the com-
bustion chamber at pressures of up
to 1,800 bar. In some cases, an in-
jection process can involve the in-
jection of the tiniest of amounts
weighing less than a thousandth of
a gram.
Pre-injection results in a “gentle”
combustion process and conse-
quently excellent combustion
acoustics and agreeable engine
running characteristics.
