Electronic Stabilisation Programme ESP
networks the ABS, EBD, ASR and EDL with its own
sensors and compares driving data with reference data;
provides better stability at all speeds by targeted braking
of individual wheels and intervention in the engine
management system
ESP with electronic cross-axle lock
A5 Coupé/A5 Cabriolet: the electronic cross-axle
locking function is incorporated into the ESP on front-
wheel drive models. It distributes the drive torque by
means of targeted braking actions, depending on the
driving situation. When cornering, the cross-axle lock
actively counteracts understeer. The result is improved
traction and dynamic performance when cornering and
more precise and neutral handling (less understeer).
Agility during steering is also improved.
Electromechanical power steering system
maintenance-free rack & pinion steering with speed-
dependent servo assistance; precise steering feel at
high speeds, excellent assistance when parking
Manual transmission
A5 Coupé/A5 Cabriolet: 6-speed, all-synchromesh,
hydraulically-actuated dry clutch with asbestos-free

multitronic
A5 Coupé/A5 Cabriolet: the multitronic generation of
continuously variable transmissions, featuring dynamic
gear control program (DCP) and sport program;
8 different gears can be selected in manual mode;
hydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch (available for
models with front-wheel drive)
S tronic
available for models with quattro® permanent all-wheel
drive, the 7-speed, electrohydraulically actuated dual-
clutch transmission facilitates shorter gearshift times
and gearshifting with virtually no perceptible
interruption in the power flow; can be operated via the
shift paddles behind the steering wheel (optional,
standard with S models) or the selector lever. In
automatic mode the driver can choose between the
programs D (normal) and S (sport).
Front-wheel drive

quattro®
permanent all-wheel drive with asymmetric/dynamic
torque distribution, self-locking centre differential with
wheel-selective torque distribution, distributes the
driving forces depending on the driving situation to
each individual wheel for precisely controlled handling
quattro® with sports differential
The electronically controlled sports differential
variably distributes driving force to each wheel and
ensures outstanding acceleration performance in
corners and stabilises the vehicle’s response to load
change. It also improves direct steering characteristics
and provides more agile handling due to the lower
steering effort required. A5 Coupé/A5 Cabriolet: only
available for 3.0 TDI
Recuperation
Increasing the generator voltage converts kinetic
energy into usable electrical energy when the vehicle
is coasting or braking. This energy is then used to
assist the generator during subsequent acceleration,
saving up to 3 % fuel.
Start-stop system
helps to reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions
by switching off the engine in stationary phases, e.g.
at traffic lights. The starting process is initiated as
soon as the driver presses the clutch or releases the
foot brake for the vehicle to move off again.

incorrect fuelling of diesel vehicles with petrol
