One in every two Audi cars sold today is a diesel.
What sounds perfectly normal now was cause
for huge excitement 20 years ago, when Audi
revolutionised the market with the first 2.5 TDI
engine. Since then, developments such as
common rail technology with its refined and
precise fuel distribution have made TDI even
more efficient. Consequently, since the first TDI,
the engines have become more economical,
whilst specific output has increased. So it was
only logical that a diesel car should then enter
the world of motorsport. And successfully too:
in2006, Audi was the first car maker to win
the 24 hours of Le Mans with a diesel-powered
race car, the Audi R10 TDI – and then went on
to repeat this victory several times over.
Powerful 2.0 TDI and 3.0 TDI engines are available
for the Audi A4, and these are equipped with
intelligent common rail diesel technology. In
addition, they are equipped with the start-stop
system as standard. The 3.0 TDI (180kW) is
additionally available for the A4 and A4 allroad
quattro* as clean diesel. This engine employs a
technology that systematically reduces nitrogen
oxides. In addition to their efficiency, the TDI
engines are of course also characterised by
their power. With the Audi A4 Saloon and the
A4 Avant which are driven by 2.0 TDI engines
with 100 kW and 112 or 116 g CO₂/km, and with
120 kW and 115 or 120 g CO₂/km, the balance
between performance and consumption has
been specifically further improved. These
models are in particular characterised by a low
consumption and reduced CO₂ emissions.

The piezo injectors in the 3.0 TDI
open and close in fractions of a milli-
second and inject fuel several times
into the combustion chamber at
pressures of up to 2,000 bar. In some
cases, an injection process can involve
the injection of the tiniest of amounts
weighing less than a thousandth of a
gram.
Pre-injection results in a “gentle”
combustion process and consequently
excellent combustion acoustics
and agreeable engine running
characteristics.
