Chapter 3 Assembling the System

Licensing the Avid Nitris DNA System
You no longer need an application key (Dongle) to use your system.
Avid now provides a utility that generates a system ID number based on your hardware
components. It generates a license file with that system ID number. See the Avid DS Nitris
Installation and Administration Guide for instructions on how to generate the system ID and
license your system.
Connecting the SCSI Local Storage Systems
Avid DS supports two standalone, local SCSI storage systems:
Avid MediaDock LVD
Avid MediaDock Ultra320
Both of these storage systems connect to the two SCSI channels at the rear of the
workstation (see the following figure) and must be striped to provide the needed throughput.
For striping information, see the Avid DS Installation & Administration Guide.
n
Avid typically supports newer drives as they become available. For the latest list of
supported drives, see your Avid DS sales representative.
SCSI Connections at the Rear of the System
n
The connections at the rear of the workstation are HD 68-pin connectors. If you are going to
use SCSI devices for standalone storage, you must order the cables separately when you
order your Avid DS system.
The maximum total length of the external SCSI cables must not exceed 66-feet (20 meters).
For example, if you are using two MediaDock enclosures (one enclosure on each SCSI
channel) you could use a 33-foot (10-meter) SCSI cable for each SCSI channel.
