Multi Instance system architecture
Why a multi instance architecture
The main reasons for working in a multi-instance configuration are
Improved reliability: when one Domino server becomes unavailable users may continue
sending SMS messages via one the other servers. Domino routing and replication may
be configured in such a way that this is transparant for them.
Least cost routing: in a multi-country environment it may be cheaper to use Domino
replication to route the request to a server that has a low cost Sms connection to the
requested destination. The configuration of the least-cost routing is very flexible and
takes into account the phone cost, the replication cost and the workload of the instances.
Clustering: mail is considered as a critical service by many companies . Domino
clustering is frequently used in these environments. Sms4Domino may also be used in a
clustered environment offering improved reliability and throughput.
Building blocks
In the multi-instance configuration the Sms4Domino databases are replicated over different
Domino servers. By preference cluster based replication is used. Every replica of the
configuration database has a corresponding Sms4Domino instance. This instance runs either on
the Domino server (server add-in) or on a Notes client (standalone version). Each Sms4Domino
instance manages zero, one or more GSM modems.
Example of processing a SMS request
Company ACME has offices in France, Germany and the UK. There is a Domino server in each
of the countries. To benefit of least cost SMS routing Sms4Domino has been installed on each
server.
User John, working in the UK, would like to send a Sms to his frient Paul. Paul lives in France.
John sends a mail to Paul@+33477858589@sms. Domino mail routing delivers the mail in the
Sms4Domino mailbox on John's home server. Sms4Domino picks up the request, analyzes the
phone number and calculates the lowest cost route for sending the SMS. The server in France
should do the actual sending. Sms4Domino-UK stores the best route in the Notes document.
The document replicates to the server in France (this replication happens within a few seconds in
case of a Domino cluster; if clustering is not available Sms4Domino-UK will initiate the
replication to Sms4Domino-FR).
Sms4Domino-FR sees the new request and sends the SMS via the local GSM modem.
