Configuration of Nokia GSM modem
An evaluation version of Sms4Domino may be downloaded. During that period you could consider
using a GSM (mobilephone) for sending and receiving Sms messages. We strongly recommend to
obtain an industrial grade modem when moving into production.
In this section we will explain how to connect a Nokia GSM to Sms4Domino. More detailed
information is available at Nokia's web site. Connection of other modems will be similar.
Configuration steps
Verify that your GSM has been tested with Smslib. Do not proceed if your phone is not
listed. Consult the FAQ section in this help file for a complete list. In following example we
will use a Nokia 6070 phone.
Install a SIM card in the GSM. Power on the GSM and supply the PIN code. Try to
send/receive at least one SMS message.
Obtain a compatible cable to connect your phone to a USB port of your computer. In
following example we will use a Nokia CA-42 cable. In theory you could use a Bluetooth or
infrared connection. However we experienced fewer difficulties when using a cable.
Download the driver software. In case of Nokia it is not required to download and install the
full PC suite. Only the cable driver must be installed.
Install the cable driver software before connecting the GSM to the PC. Consult the attached
quick installation guide for more details.
Connect the GSM to the computer.
Verify the virtual COM port that has been created. Open the Windows control panel, and
select System -> Device manager. You should find the GSM modem within the Modems
category (Nokia CA-42 USB modem in the example)
Double click the entry for the Nokia modem. The port number (e.g. COM6) is listed within the
Modem tab. You will need this number when configuring the Sms4Domino gateway
document. You may need to lower the maximum port speed. The speed used by
Sms4Domino will be defined later in the Sms4Domino gateway document.
