Because of DVR can support viewing the video via network remotely, hence you can control the DVR
remotely, including, monitoring, recording, playing back or making backup.
There are 4 types of network setup in DVR:

DHCP
The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is an auto configuration
protocol used on IP networks.
PPPoE
The Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) is a network protocol for
encapsulating Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) frames inside Ethernet frames.
Static IP
Internet Protocol addresses are assigned to a host either a new at the time of
booting, or permanently by fixed configuration of its hardware or software.
Persistent configuration is also known as using a static IP address. In contrast,
in situations when the computer's IP address is assigned newly each time, this
is known as using a dynamic IP address.
Static IP addresses are manually assigned to a computer by an administrator.
The exact procedure varies according to platform. This contrasts with dynamic
IP addresses, which are assigned either by the computer interface or host
software itself.
3G
Used when ADSL connection isn't available. With this solution the device can
be only send mail and cannot be configured remotely.
DDNS(Dynamic DNS)
Dynamic DNS is a method, protocol, or network service that provides the
capability for a networked device, such as a router or computer system using
the Internet Protocol Suite, to notify a domain name server to change, in real
time, the active DNS configuration of its configured hostnames, addresses or
other information stored in DNS.
