Maximizing Telephone System Performance
If you have unused (vacant) outside line jacks on your Merlin Control Unit, you can
use them to maximize the overall performance of your telephone system. Consider
using these vacant jacks as access lines to the CLASSIC MAIL system. Access lines are
the lines you use to retrieve your messages from the CLASSIC MAIL system.
The benefit of this option is that you can retrieve messages from a Merlin telephone
without using any of your actual outside lines. This eliminates the possibility that
incoming callers would get a busy signal if they call when all your outside lines are
in use retrieving messages.
An example of this installation is shown in Figure 4D. Note that in this example, the
incoming lines do not connect directly to the CLASSIC MAIL system; instead, two
vacant outside line jacks are used to connect the CLASSIC MAIL system to your
